What is Feminism?

Hey every one today I am writing a post on a cause that is quite important to me. I haven’t talked about this on my blog before but feminism is something I am exceedingly passionate about. No I haven’t been treated unfairly. No, there isn’t any personal trauma behind the belief. I originally found something about it in a book. I did some extra research and figured considering I am female it would be pretty stupid not to want equality for myself and the billions of other women out there.

Before I start this post I would like to give you my definition of feminism. Feminism is wanting equal rights. Personally I know that being a feminist is often quite misunderstood. Saying that I’m a feminist doesn’t mean that I hate all men. It doesn’t mean I want all the power to the women. It means that I want equality. It doesn’t mean that men won’t have to give up some of their power, because they will. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to disagree with them sometimes, because I will. But this is all part of it. Feminism is believing that women and men are equals. That we should be treated the same. Whether that’s what we wear, the title we’re given, how we treat one another or how much we’re payed.

I know when I talk about feminism that a lot of people envision angry women parading up and down busy city streets with posters in arm. I know some people automatically think about discrimination against girls who want to play soldiers or wear shorts instead of skirts. Some people see women working alongside men in major corporate jobs. Yes that is all apart of it. But it is apart of a much bigger picture.

One thing that is often misinterpreted is that feminism is only about girls. It’s not. Feminism includes letting boys wear dresses or play with barbies. It includes getting rid of that stereotypes that has been set for us, that boys have to be manly and girls have to be girly. That boys can’t cry and girls have to be lady-like. I’m not saying you can’t be those things I’m saying you should have a choice. I know that some people say that we do have a choice, but really we don’t. It’s either we fit into this mould that the world has shaped or we face discrimination, bullying and a hardship because we are different. Feminism is about freedom and liberation. It’s about tearing down those moulds that society has set for us. Not just for women but for the human race as a whole.

The Oxford dictionary defines feminism as; “The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.”

In summary feminism is something that is quite often misunderstood. I felt it was important to correct some misunderstandings that people have about this particular topic.

I would like to thank you for reading this post. Wishing you a wonderful day!

Black Lives Matter

Black people and Indigenous people have been mistreated and abused for centuries. It is a practise that has lasted too long and must be changed. Your race and the colour of your skin should not matter, we are all human. This post is all about the mistreatment of the African-American people. This is a call for change, something must be done to handle the violence and abuse that has been, and continues to be, inflicted upon them. I am calling for change.

Before I get on with this post I would like to address something that I have come across quite often. I would like to ask you a question. When you hear the words Black lives matter, what is your immediate response? Is it to agree to the statement or counter it with all lives matter? Or do you go on with everyday life like nothing has happened? If you feel like responding to that statement with “all lives matter” or “all lives are worth the same”, I would like you to think about the impact of your words. Saying all lives matter is like bringing a present to a friends party and saying it’s for your cousin who’s birthday is next week, because her birthday matters too. It is like pinning a poster for your lost cat over the top of someone else’s for their lost dog, because all pets are worth the same. You see what I mean? Also if you say all lives matter and truly believe what you’re saying, you’ll acknowledge that all lives won’t matter until Black ones do too. It is not just your words that can impact others, it can also be your silence. If you don’t say anything, you have chosen the side of the opposer. You don’t have to do much, just show your support, educate yourself on the horrible things that happen in our world and spread the word. Tell others about all these dreadful events that occurs in our world every day. Think of all our Black and Indigenous people, they are all human too. I don’t mean this to upset or anger anyone I am simply asking that you think before you say. Now on with the post.

African – Americans

As most know African-Americans were enslaved throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Although some things have improved, they are still disregarded and harmed unfairly. Recently there was an incident where an African – American man died a tragic and unjust death. His name was George Floyd. He had a life, a family and dreams. Black Lives Matter is an international movement that was founded in 2012 after the death of African – American teenager Trayvon Martin. Since Mr Floyds death there has been an uproar of supporters to this movement. This is a result of people worldwide having enough with racism.

Government and Police Racism and Brutality

The story of George Floyd has made its way across the globe and has sparked outrage around the world and so it should. It is a tragic story of injustice and abuse. For anyone who doesn’t know the story of George Floyd I have linked it here. What happened to Mr Floyd is unacceptable. I am a white Australian girl on the other side of the world and I am pretty sure I’m not alone when I say I am outraged by this incident. George Floyd was not the only case of death at the hands of racism. Even in Australia our Indigenous Australians (the Aboriginal people) are nowhere near as well treated as the average white Australian. Around the world people are taking part in protests. People are angry. Fired up not just about Mr Floyd but about thousands of Black people whose lives have been taken from them by police. All those people who are afraid to walk past a police car for fear of being abused or killed. The stats for police abuse of African-Americans in the U.S are disgusting. To give you an insight I have included stats in the following section.

Police Brutality Statistics (USA)

The statistics for police abuse of black people is disturbing and completely wrong. African-Americans make up 12% of the total American population, but they make-up 37% of prisoners. Black people make up the majority of the American inmates with white Americans making the 2nd largest and Hispanics making the 3rd. African-Americans also make up 26.4% of the people killed by police. In America 1004 people were shot and killed by police in 2019. It has also been proven that Black women are killed at a higher rate than any other group of women. African-Americans are 10x more likely to be jailed than white Americans.

What Needs to Happen

The main issue in this is power. We need white people to come and fight, to use their white privilege to help fight for equality. We need people to break the silence and face the facts. We need people to educate themselves on the horrors that occur. We need people to speak out. Right now thousands of protests are happening worldwide Black and White people coming together for peace and equality. That is how we are going to get out of this. By helping each other many races, many colours, all human.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

8 Ideas to Keep Productive and Organised

Hey y’all. Following along my recent theme of things to do in quarantine I decided to do a whole post on things that you can do at home. That are not only going to save you from boredom but also help you keep organised and productive at home. Hope you enjoy this post!

Podcasts

I’m relatively new to the world of podcasts but have been loving them lately. Podcasts are such a helpful and productive thing to do and enjoy. There are sooo many different podcasts available I am sure you will find one. For example there a loads of health and lifestyle ones out there, that I have recently been enjoying. There are also business, science and travel oriented podcasts, there are literally tons to choose from. My favourite podcast at the moment is Rise and Conquer. Rise and Conquer is a podcast for women who a looking to take control of their lives and put their best foot forward. It has a range of episodes from talking to dieticians to tips on how to grow your business if you want somewhere to start, its a really cool podcast which I highly recommend.

Meal Prep

Prepping meals is something that is highly recommended by a lot of health professionals. But for a lot of people we don’t really have hours to spend making meals in preparation for the week ahead. By the end of the week all you want is to watch Netflix, go for a walk or you may even have home work to do. The point is very few people have enough time to squeeze making meals for hours on end into their already cramped schedule. So a positive of the current situation is that I now have an extra 1 1/2 hours because we no longer have to commute to work or school. So we can now use our extra time for productive things that’ll benefit you and your health including prepping meals. Meal prep is extremely useful for people with allergies or restrictive diets like myself. I don’t do much meal prep but have wanted to for sometime but haven’t been able to find the time. So this one is a reminder for me as well.

Blogging

Blogging is a super fun productive activity! Whether you have your own blog already or have been wanting to start one now is the perfect time to blitz it. This tip is something I do all the time. It is a fun and creative outlet and a great thing to do with your time. I personally have done so much work on my blog of late. Just because I’ve had the extra time. If you’ve wanted to start a blog but have been procrastinating or running out of time go for it!

Donations

Something you could do that not only helps you keep organised but also helps those who are less fortunate than you is donations. For example if you’ve really been wanting to clean out your wardrobe but have been putting it off now’s the time. Instead of throwing all of the clothes you no longer want out, you can sort the pieces and those that are in relatively good shape could be donations. I am sure a quick Google will help you find a charity needing your donation. Donating things you don’t use anymore is a great thing to do! As it is not only good for you but also benefits others and is good for the environment.

Create a new workout

Working out is such a great use of time (just don’t over do it.). So whilst you have the extra time why don’t you try some different workouts and create a custom one that works best for you. There are a lot of free workouts on platforms like YouTube and Pinterest. If you already know a bit about exercise you may just want to create your own from scratch. Either way working out is proven to not only be good for your physical health but also benefit your mental health. Personally I think mental health and self love is so important especially in difficult times like this. Working out will help you feel great about yourself as well as keep those positive vibes high.

Clean Your Room

Honestly we probably all expected this one and have heard it a million times but there are a lot more reasons to do it than the obvious “so it looks tidy” reason we’ve all heard a million times. I don’t know if it’s just me but I can’t focus on writing my blog post, doing homework, studying for the next test or whatever it is I’m doing if my room is a mess. Having a nice environment to do your school work or study in makes all the difference. Some studies have actually proven that people can sometimes be subconsciously stressed or anxious just because the environment their in is not clean. Besides if you clean your room now and get it over and done with the chances are you won’t have to do it again for a while.

Set Goals

I feel like a lot of people rush around and set goals at the beginning of the new year but forget about them by April. If that’s you don’t worry because now we have loads of extra time on our hands to set goals and make plans so we can actually achieve them. People set goals all different ways and have all different goals but there really is no wrong way to do it. There are a lot of different ways to plan out your goals. So whilst your home you can look into whatever way you would like to set out your goals.

Learn a new language

This one is a bit random but super useful and fun. This is extremely useful if you planned to go somewhere before COVID-19 and have had to postpone it. You could use the time stuck at home to learn the language so you interact with locals once you get there. Also if you’re learning a language at school you could do some extra study. You could also just learn a language for the fun of it. I have a language app called Duolingo which I highly recommend. It is the best rated language app on the App Store.

Thank you for reading to the end I hope you enjoyed todays post and found it useful. Please remember that sometimes relaxing is the most productive thing you can do. Keep smiling and being positive. The more positive you are the better you and the people around you will feel. Have a wonderful day! – Sophie

17 Things To Do When You’re Bored!

Hey y’all! Given the current situation I thought it may be appropriate to do a post just on things to do when your bored. I know that all over the world COVID-19 has been causing some serious issues and as a result most of us are confined to our houses. I personally have been super bored and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one! So here are some of the things that have kept me sane during this difficult time! I hope you find these Ideas useful.

  • You could play dominoes (although I don’t recommend these for people with a short temper it took 5 knocked over attempts and a lot of groaning before I finished mine 😂)
  • Organise your room (I seriously love organising my room! Yeah, I’m weird like that! But quarantine is just an excuse to organise your life!)
  • On the topic of organising your life you could Start a bullet journal if you haven’t already got one starting a bullet journal is a great pass time. You could even research styles and techniques there are tons of YouTube Videos and Pinterest boards you could collect inspiration from.
  • Try a new workout. Honestly whether you make up your own or try a pilates class anything is better than nothing!
  • At Home Photo shoot see this as a challenge and put your photography skills to the test. See how many photos you can get from just what’s around your house!
  • Cooking!! So I’ve been trying to bake so many tings during quarantine, and hey wouldn’t you! Not only does it keep you entertained also gives you a yummy snack to look forward to.
  • Have a self-care day, paint your nails, do a face mask sleep in til 12 o’clock. Plan a day to do whatever you like and take care of yourself.
  • Play a game with a friend, who says you can’t play trivia or guess who remotely? Pick up the phone and call a friend you may even like to call someone you haven’t talked to for a while!
  • Read! I know readings not for everyone but its become my daily ritual! If u need something to read here are my favourite books !
  • Go check out some other blogs! I love reading blogs! It’s one of my favourite things about having WordPress! I’m currently looking for ideas on new blogs to look at if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them!
  • Take up a new hobby! Whether you like cooking, art or swimming you could definitely take up a new hobby! Personally during quarantine I took up running something I was never really good at and used the extra time to improve!
  • Write a post COVID-19 bucket list I did this not to long ago and really enjoyed it. It’s a great way to pass the time I even did some extra research on the places I chose! You can see my post COVID-19 bucket list on my blog or you can click Here!
  • Take a Quiz! This is honestly the best pass time ever! By the way which Hogwarts house are you in? I’m a Ravenclaw!
  • If your super bored and don’t know what to do you could try doing extra Study. I know it’s not the most exciting but it could be the difference between a pass and a fail.
  • Create a new playlist! Create yourself a new playlist, turn it up loud and dance like no ones watching!
  • Set yourself some goals! Acknowledge what it is that you want to achieve and write it down! Creating goals and placing them somewhere where you can see them can be a mighty motivator!
  • Create a Vision Board, creating a vision board is like a visual representation of what you want to achieve in a certain amount of time. Whether you sit down and physically make one or create a new board on Pinterest is up to you. But either way it’s a really fun and productive thing to do with your time!

Thanks for sticking around to the end! If your bored at the moment and need something to do I hope this was able to help you! Wishing you and your families best of luck in this difficult time! Keep smiling!

Top 5 MUST Read books!

Hey y’all! Welcome back to another one of my posts! Today I’m going to be counting down my top 5 favourite books! I’m a huge bookworm and have spent most of my holidays reading.(Not like I can do much else!) So I thought I’d share with you my favourites! Please note that all of these decisions are my own and genuine opinion.

Kenzies Rules For Life

Coming in at number 5 is Kenzies Rules For Life by Mackenzie Ziegler. Dancer, singer, actress and model Mackenzie Ziegler has added Author to her list of titles, and I’ve gotta say I’m glad she did! This book has everything from DIY’s to talking about her own insecurities. It’s massively inspirational! You won’t be bored! Her sunny attitude literally is transmitted through the page ( Is that possible?) it doesn’t matter. This book will keep you engaged from cover to cover as well as giving you fun ideas to do afterwards! It left me jumping up and down ready to take on the world! This biography even had a workout in it! It has everything you need (inspiration, workouts, recommendations) to make you feel like a #Girlboss 😂!

Harry Potter

Placing at number 4 is JK Rowling’s classic. The Harry Potter series. Ranging from The Philosphers Stone – The Deathly Hallows these books enchant both adults and children alike. It’s a whole multi generational fandom! The wizarding world of the boy who lived is guaranteed to add a little magic to your muggle life. Each page is filled with spells, charms, friendship and action. In my opinion these books definitely live up to their name. I found as the books progressed I just needed the next ones more and more! I also caught myself daydreaming about being whisked away to Hogwarts School of Witch craft and Wizardry when my muggle life seemed a bit glum. You can count on these books to take you on a magical journey far far away! I’ll think that you’ll find that wizards and muggles alike will enjoy the Harry Potter Series.

Matched

The Matched trilogy (Matched,Crossed,Reached) By Ally Condie is a dystopian love story. Like Hunger Games it’s about a world divided into ranks, forced to give up freedom and not getting to choose who they love. Thats until Cassia falls in love with someone whom she hasn’t been paired with. That’s not the only problem this boy (Ky) is an aberration and is sent to die in a world outside the society. The three books document Cassia and Ky’s hard journey. It is a story not only about love but about fighting for a better world. In the story Cassia has to leave her family to join the rising and take down the society. She becomes what’s known as a rebel and secretly works against the society. This page turner is beautifully written and touches your heart. The series is an amazing story for fighting for what you want and standing up for what’s right even if it comes with sacrifice.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians

Based of Greek mythology this 5 book series ranging from The Lightning Thief – The Last Olympian is vastly entertaining! I have to admit when I first got the books I was a bit sceptical, kind of like Percy until he reached Camp Half – Blood. So just hang in there. English teacher Rick Riordan has really excelled with this series. From the moment we walked into Camp Half – Blood to the Next Great Prophecy I was hooked! On all the myths, magic, cute Percy and Annabeth moments, the Di angelos sibling love or Grovers nature patrolling I just couldn’t put the books down! Each book was just as exciting as the last. I still remember when Percy met Luke and I was like awww he made a friend and by the end of the book I was screaming die Luke die 😂😂! The books are a recount of Percy’ adventures from fighting a Minotaur, visiting the underworld, descending into the labyrinth, fighting Kronos and trying to figure out girls 😂 Percy has many adventures none of them you want to miss!

The Heroes of Olympus

Coming in at No.1 is my favourite book series The Heroes of Olympus. The series is five books long ranging from The Lost Hero – The Blood Of Olympus the series is an add on to hit series Percy Jackson and The Olympians. Join friends new and old on a series of quests and a final voyage to carry out the Prophecy of The Seven and defeat the earth goddess herself Gaea and the awakening giants and there forces. Old enemies combine forces in this action packed thriller! The best part? Is that Percy and Annabeth are back and better than ever! New faces Piper, Jason, Leo, Hazel and Frank are all loveable characters with there own backstories that intertwine with the rising war. Whether your a returning Percy Jackson Fan or a new reader your going to love this series. The Heroes of Olympus is an amazing series by author Rick Riordan. This series tops my list for the amazing storytelling and the characters who save our world once again.

Thanks for sticking around til the end. I hope I was able to inspire some new reading ideas whilst we’re all locked away😂! Hope you enjoyed your read. If you have book suggestions I’m always open for new ones! Thanks for reading have a great day!
